March 2010
The annual RYLA camp is scheduled for July 2010 and Ken Lennox has been trying hard to attract participants. Thus far there is only one female
applicant and unless there are any further applications, it looks like she will be the only candidate.
March 2010
The club organised the Young Musician competition in Woodend Barn.
Unlike previous events, this one comprised only Banchory Academy
pupils - which took the competitive edge off the event a little. Ken
Lennox did a lot of hard work behind the scenes to make this event
possible and the winner Zoe Yuile went forward to the regional finals at
Glenallan School at the end of the month.

the Year trophy from Rotary District 1010 Governor, Bill Macfarlane
Smith, along with pianist Andrew McLean, winner of the Best Male
Musician prize.

The club recently welcomed new member Chris Fry of Crathes. Chris had many years in the aviation
industry with Bristows Helicopters and was based in the SE of England before moving to Crathes around
4 years ago.
There are a few other potential members processing through the admission procedure at present and it
looks as though we should have a number of new members in the coming weeks.
April 2010
Club members Ed Read, George Sinclair and Geoff Wilkinson
were awarded Paul Harris Fellowships - the highest Rotary
honour for their many years dedicated and devoted service.
All three were, in their own words, speechless and totally
surprised by the award. Well deserved and merited in each
case.
The club has a record of awarding few PHF’s over the years.
Unlike Rotary in the USA, where honours can be bought,
Rotary Clubs in the UK only bestow awards for exceptional
service and only with the endorsement and blessing of all
members.

First Heat Primary School Quiz
Ken Lennox arranged the local heat of the annual Rotary
Primary Schools Quiz at Banchory Primary School on
Wednesday 21st April. Teams of four from all the Banchory
Network schools took part and enjoyed a fun but competitive
afternoon of questions on a wide range of subjects.
Winners were the team representing the 'smaller' schools of
Drumoak, Durris, Crathes and Strachan and the team are
pictured with their trophies:

Anna Barton, Strachan and Jenny Lusby, Crathes
The winners go forward to represent Banchory in the Aberdeen
Area heat which takes place in mid May.

New members Sigrid Medley-Tellefsen and Robin Macmillan
were inducted as members of of Banchory-Ternan Rotary Club.
Sorry about the poor photographic quality. With the exception of
Jim Thomson, all others look far better in real-life.

10th May 2010
The annual President’s barbecue was held yesterday in Drumoak and was attended by around 60 members, family and friends. It took the same
format as last year with a number of sporting activities to keep everyone occupied and happy. These included fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting,
croquet, putting, boules, deck quoits and rowing. Reg Wilkin even managed to catch a fine 1 1/2 pound trout (image to follow).
Catering was up to the usual excellent standard with barbecued steak, sausages, marinated chicken fillets and burgers all served with a wonderful
selection of salads. Unfortunately the weather was less like May and more like February with a cool northerly wind and, later in the afternoon,
showers.
Thanks to Geoff, George, John Mac, wives and other supporting crew for a well-organised and enjoyable day.
29th April 2010
On Saturday 24th April, sixteen Rotarians supported local GPs Dr Stephen, Dr Sandy Rough and Fiona Murray, Public Health Co-coordinator -
South Aberdeenshire. in running the bi-ennial Stroke Awareness Clinic in Morrison's Supermarket. Over 80 Morrison's customers took the time to
have their blood pressure taken. At the end of the four hour session Dr Stephens reinforced how important it is for everyone to keep a regular
check on BP and said that one serious irregular heartbeat had been picked up and that another 19 people had been recommended to have a GP
health review. Rotary's Community Service Convener, Peter McDermott said, "We are once more indebted to our local GP Practice and our local
supermarket Morrison's, for collaborating with the club in ensuring that this important health screening event continues to support our local
population."
July 30th - Banchory Show
As in past years, the club was represented at the Banchory show with a tombola, dice game and we also had the CLAN
Mini Raffle. Working in four relays of 6 people, members worked from 08.30H through to close at 18.00H. The good
weather brought out a good crowd and business was brisk - especially for Mini raffle tickets. Images to follow shortly.
July 27th - Visit of DG Iain MadDonald and his wife Winnie
Assisted by a stuffed meerkat, Ian gave a presentation on his vision of Rotary for the coming year. Unlike most of the
previous DG’s visits, Iain lived locally in Durris for a number of years and found the visit a bit of a ‘homecoming’.
Winnie gave a short presentation on her literacy project and told the members how important it was to collect new
childrens’ books to donate to the CHAS hospices.
July 20th - presentation by Alex Tilly of Torphins - prospective Olympic skier
Alex and her father Dave explained how she is working towards selection for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The exercise,
training and diet regime sounded horrific. Alex even missed out on a free meal at the Burnett to put in a training session in
the gym whilst the rest of us tucked into our meal. A range of equipment was on show and we heard of all the early
mornings, late nights and worldwide travel. In the past the club has assisted Alex and we were delighted to hadd over a
sponsor pack so that Alex can put Rotary stickers and patches on her kit and clothing to acknowledge the sponsorship.
July 1st - Curlers night out
The club has a very active (but fairly unsuccessful) curling section. It’s been a tradition to meet for a meal once a year,
usually during the off-season. The evening is an opportunity to recognise the support and encouragement of spouses and
partners.
This year 7 curlers and wives attended a very enjoyable meal at the Echt Tandoori
June 19th - Norwegian visitors head home
Our club has been twinned with the Rotary Klubb of Vesby for a number of years. Over this period there have been a
number of formal exchange visits in either direct as well some ‘private’ visits too. We’ve been delighted to share our 40th
Charter celebrations with 19 Norwegian friends and have enjoyed their company at a range of social events and activities
including golf, sightseeing, shopping, distillery visits and a cleilidh. The major event was of course the Charter Dinner on
Friday Night
June 17th - 40th Charter Dinner
Nearly 200 guests attended the charter dinner in the Royal British Legion. Not only were kilts and dinner jackets worn with
pride but so too were the wonderfully coloured traditional Norwegian costumes. Guest of honour was past RI president
John Kenny and the speakers included George Esson, Stewart Wilson, President Edwina Keown, Ryan Bond and key Jim
Brown. After months of organisation the committee laid on a really special and memorable evening. We are all looking
forward to the 50th in 2021.
February 3rd 2011
Local woman Kathrine Ross of Banchory has been awarded Rotary’s highest merit of order when she was presented with
a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) in recognition of her extraordinary work for ‘Help for Heroes’. This is the first occasion in
40 years that a PHF has been awarded to an individual who is not a member of the club.
Katherine thought that she was attending a regular meeting of the club along with distinguished speaker Col Clive
Fairweather, a former commander in the Black Watch, who spoke on his time in the SAS. The surprised look on
Katherine’s face when she realised that she was a recipient was a real picture.
December 22nd
Club members set up and ran a mulled wine and mince pie stand at the Christmas Farmer’s Market in Banchory. It was a
bitterly cold morning but the warm mix of fruit and alcohol had a warming effect. The pies were donated by the Burnett
Arms Hotel - to whom we are very grateful.
October 7th 2010
Last night’s meeting was certainly not an ordinary one. It was the disbursement evening of funds allocated by past
president Jim Thomson and we had a number of visitors from various local organisations which included Banchory
Primary School PTA, Banchory Boy’s Club, Banchory Information Centre, the Sandpiper Trust, Kindergym, Alpine skiier
Alex Tilley, SPARKS, Little Tears Foundation and Sue Edwards of BDI who was present to collect the Walter Smith
Rosebowl in recognition of her outstanding service within the community.
September 5th 2010
The club again represented District 1010 at the Royal Braemar Highland Gathering.
It was one of the busiest days since we began attending in 2001 and we welcomed visitors from Le Touquet (France),
Louisiana, Eastbourne, Australia, the Phillipines, California, Greece and even Chile.
Members also sold raffle tickets for a Ford Ka
22nd August 2010
The 2010 Inchmarlo Golf Challenge was played on a beautiful sunny morning and afternoon of torrential showers. 42 teams entered and the
competition was keen. Click here for results
Many thanks to Inchmarlo Golf Course, the sponsors, the many teams and local companies who all made the event possible.
31st July 2010
The annual Banchory Show was held on Saturday 31st July and, as in past years, Rotary had a stand on which there was a tombola, ‘throw the
dice’ and also a raffle for an item of diamond jewellery (organised by the Rotary Club of Turriff).
Although the day started dry, rain started around lunch-time resulting in lower numbers of visitors.
9th June 2010
A company of sixty-five Rotarians, partners and guests young and old,
shared the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Banchory-Ternan last
Wednesday. The highlight of the evening was when the finalists of the Club's
annual Young Speechmakers made their presentations to the assembled
audience. The speakers were introduced by Youth Activities Convener,
Rotarian Ken Lennox.
Following the meal it was the turn of the after dinner speakers, to entertain
the audience with their speeches. Each speaker was allowed up to four
minutes to deliver their speech and they could use a variety of visual aids.
Each of the pupils then delivered their speeches to the audience and the
panel of three judges. While the judges made their deliberations, the
audience were entertained by Banchory Academy sixth year student;
Suzanne Eakin who played a selection of musical items on the piano.
The Chairman of the judging panel, Ian Hendry, then announced the results.
In his introductory comments he said "The standard of all of the participating
pupils from Primary Schools in and around Banchory for 2010 was quite
outstanding and in this regard, all the pupils who took part are to be
congratulated."
He then announced that the Young Speechmaker for 2010 was Matthew Morrison of Banchory Primary School, who made his speech on Keyhole
Surgery not only highly amusing but also a very factually accurate account of the procedures involved. In second place and also from Banchory
Primary School Jovita Fawcett transported the audience around the world in her speech on the New Seven Wonders of the World, in which she
changed an item of her apparel to represent each of the wonders. In third place, representing Hill of Banchory School was Fraser Wyness, whose
speech on the phenomenon of Natural Disasters was well paced and extremely well researched. The prizes were presented by Ken Lennox.
At the end of a very entertaining evening, Rotary President Jim Thomson thanked the assembled audience, Suzanne for her musical entertainment
and he congratulated the three young speakers for the very high quality of their work.
